Out of the Depths into Hope (Tanya Thomas)

Psalm 130:1-8

“Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord” (Psalm 130:1). In  Hebrew, “depth” means “deep waters.” The psalmist of  this passage cries out for help, revealing his deep  awareness of his sin. Imagine him feeling as if he’s  crying out from the bottom of a deep body of water, or  in this case, out of the depths of his suffering. He  expresses his need for mercy and pleads for God’s  forgiveness. He is also determined to wait upon God  and the rescue He would bring. But he doesn’t just put  his hope in the mercy or redemption itself. He puts his  hope in God himself, finding solace in who God is:  sovereign, steadfast, loving, forgiving and faithful.

What a privilege it is that we can cry out to God in our  greatest depths and be heard by Him in the heights of  heaven, knowing that he will one day deliver us. Those  who have been in the depths know they can have no  confidence in themselves, but that our only hope is the  God who graciously forgives.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, we thank you for being our forgiving and faithful  Father and for your steadfast love. Please forgive us  for our sins and give us the patience to willingly wait  for you to deliver us from the depths of our sin and  suffering and trust in your timing. Amen.
