The lost practice of Scripture Memorization (Jeremey Mathew)

Psalms 119:9-11

Many of us have Sunday School trophies for ourselves  and/or our children (for those who have kids) from  winning memory verse competitions. But as we get  older, the practice of memorizing scripture gets stored  away like those trophies in shelves for display.  Just as Prayer is seen as an important discipline and  practice, memorization of scripture should be placed  with just as much importance. Jesus used scripture  many times, most noticeably in Matthew 4:1-11 to fight  off temptation against Satan. It plays a key role in  Sanctification for renewing our minds and becoming  more aligned with God’s Will (Romans 12:2, Psalms  40:8).

Many of us can recite popular songs, TV show lines,  quotes etc. But how much of God’s Word can we cite  back?

Start with memorizing one verse this week, and build  up from there (Psalms 119:11 is a good start).

CLOSING PRAYER

Father God, forgive us for forgetting Your Word and  not placing importance on keeping scripture to heart  and mind. Help us to make it a normal practice and  use Your Word just as Christ did. Amen.
