Jeremiah 18:1-6
Through the words spoken to the prophet Jeremiah we are given an analogy which compares us as believers to Clay.
In this passage, we learn that Jeremiah receives God’s message by observing the work of a local potter. This passage also points to God’s provisional hand, working for Israel. Jeremiah lived during a turbulent period which was during the final years of the Kingdom of Judah, from the death of King Josiah. During this time, idolatry and disobedience became commonplace. Yet throughout this chapter, we are greeted with messages of hope for the children of Israel.
The word of the Lord came down upon Jeremiah: “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.” Even if we become disfigured by forces around us, like the potter and the clay, we too can be formed into something shaped as seemingly best. Let your thoughts and actions be shaped by the Holy spirit.
CLOSING PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for allowing us to always come back to you, no matter how much we stray. Like the Israelites, we too find comfort in the things of the world and of the cultures around us. Help
us, O God, to be shaped into perfect vessels although we are imperfect people. Help us to carry this wisdom with us to strengthen our faith and the faith of those around us. In your name we pray…Amen.
